As many of you know, the forums had a bit of an issue, due to a PHP update, with our hosting service. A 'quick fix' was implemented, to get the forums working again, but error messages were appearing, on certain pages. Additionally, the front page was completely broken, and would no longer load news stories (they are fed by these posts). To resolve this, I had to update the forum software, to the latest version, which was basically a reinstall, because the new version was such a giant leap, from the version we were running.
So why does that matter? The styling system was completely revamped, thus breaking our old theme... no conversion. I have taken this opportunity to update the style, to match the installer, and pull us out of the 90s styling, that I originally created. Aside from old images, the old theme didn't scale well, especially to smaller devices, like phones, which weren't as common back then. You're feedback is encouraged, and while I'm not going to put in time, to make massive adjustments, I will make tweaks, if provided good feedback (not 'this sucks'). I do have some small spacing tweaks to make still, but for the most part, it's the final product.
I know this new look will throw some of you off. I DO have plans to try making a theme that resembles the old style, which will be selectable in your user preferences (once it's available), for some of you old timers, who don't adjust well to change ;) I do encourage to give this style a chance though, and see if it starts to feel better.
Oh, and the front page works again :D
If you have been unable to post/reply on the forums, it was because our host required updating to the latest version of PHP. As a result, the forums required an updated.
When the PHP was initially updated, everything appeared fine, but I had not tried making a post. Warchild brought it up to me yesterday, so I have applied the necessary updates. Please let me know if you see anything else wrong.
In the future, if you are unable to make a post/reply, please mention it on the TAC Facebook page, so it can get resolved without requiring a phone call from Warchild :)
Yesterday, I had to move our database, because the webhost was going to be eliminating older, SQL4 databases. While doing this, I decided to try opening registration again. Within a 24hr period, I received around 40 registration requests from spambots. That's more than we typically get for daily visits to the site.
So, once again, user registration has been disabled. If you're reading this, and you would like to register, please check out our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/teamaerialcombat and let us know there, that you'd like to register. I know it's a pain, but with such little traffic these days, it's not worth filling my inbox with spambot requests. Chris Mahnken, 'the man who killed tribes', details out what he feels killed Vengeance. I think part of his points are valid, and actually support what I had theorized before. Money forced the game out early, and apparently, they didn't make enough money off the game to continue it, and create the mod support that it desperately needed.
This guy was suckling on the TribalWars teats though, and think some of his other views about the Tribes series are a bit off. I do agree that it isn't a good game for consoles though.
Read the whole thing here:
http://www.tribesnetwork.com/apps/forums/topics/show/4699108-interview-the-man-who-killed-starseige-tribes Ok, after working through some bugs, I am glad to announce the release of our TAC installer! Here are the instructions to run the installer:
1. The installer: Download
2. If you don't already have it, you'll need the .NET Framework 4.0 (If you don't have it, the program will tell you). You can get it here
That's it. I recommend letting it create at least ONE shortcut. The new shortcut will check for new updates every time you run the game. As usual, give me any feedback if something strange happens. http://www.torquepowered.com/community/blogs/view/20495
This explains why the sold the rights to Tribes. I guess they found out that people didn't want to play games in a browser.... especially when you lost all the benefits of a browser (cross-platform support). Now they are hoping to find a buyer for Torque. Good luck with that :roll:In the last year, many of us have started actively using Facebook and started connecting with each other on there. Because of this, I'm happy to announce that we now have a TAC Group on Facebook. Now you can easily share images, videos, and experiences and hopefully get more exposure.
This is not intended to replace this site, but should offer some additional options that this site currently doesn't offer everyone (at least for now). So, make sure to join the group, and share your media.
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=362120137903
Note: This is for ALL TAC players (1 and 2) :P Well, the TribesNext group had released a beta version of their fix for the Tribes 2 master servers, and I see there is a lot of new people joining. So, if you've now happened upon our mod in all the excitement, I wanted to say hello and welcome!
Here's a few quick things about our mod:
<*>The mod requires a clientside download, which you can get here: http://www.tacmod.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=4863*>
<*>We have Fight Nights scheduled every Friday Night at 9PM EST. You can see the announcements here: http://www.tacmod.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=18*>
<*>There is only one rule with the mod... don't touch the ground. This forces players to use the vehicles and work as a team*>
<*>The mod has several unique gametypes. I'll try to get a thread started to help explain them.*>
<*>All the maps are custom (and there are many) I recommend trying "In the City" and "Yo Ho Ho"*>
<*>Vehicle models are all custom and have a balance of speed/armor*>
<*>Don't raid the enemy base (they are protected with an invisible force field). Focus on the objectives... not base raping ;)*>
<*>The mortar acts a little different from base. Hold the mouse button for more than second and it will detonate on release of the mouse button. Otherwise it functions like base (timed detonation).*>
There are more little things about the mod to help accommodate the aerial combat and to help balance the game. You'll see this as you experience the mod :) The mod is best when there are more players, so if the mod doesn't first strike an interest when you try it, please join us on our weekly Fight Night and join a larger group of players.
Hope to see you in game.... notman I was recently setting up my linux machine to have Tribes 2 on it, and while trying to resolve issues, I found someone hosting the Linux version of the game. I've been asked in the past where this could be downloaded, now that the game is no longer supported. So anyway, here's a link: http://t2.giantfriend.com/
If you have issues getting things to run, feel free to start a help thread. I haven't gotten mine running(as of this post), but hopefully I'll have some advice once others try it.
Well, as of 2 weekends back, the Tribes 2 Master Servers were officially shut down. There are alternatives in the works, but until then, it's going to take a little additional effort to play TAC/Tribes 2. Be sure to read the Fight Night section to find out how to connect to the server of the week http://www.tacmod.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=18
Also, there still is a teamspeak server running every day, so if you are having problems connecting on Fight Night, try to jump onto teamspeak and we'll talk you through it (Since we are usually on there once gaming starts)
Ok, this was a long time coming, but I finally fixed the user profile appearance. The user profile has returned to the left side of the screen. I know I promised this back when I first updated for forum software (and it force the profile to the right), but I finally found a solution on phpbb's forums. I also got the 'Quick Reply' mod working. So look and enjoy ;)
If a good master server solution is found for the game, I'll invest some time into changing the color scheme and the look of the forums. We'll see how things evolve though.
I'd just like to draw your attention to the return of scheduled TAC1 PUGs ( http://www.tacmod.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=45 ). Craze1 has taken up the initiative of scheduling and posting about the events and I beleive he'll be sharing these duties with Farf. The first one has been scheduled for May 21... get details here: http://www.tacmod.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=5304
I think RedVan may have been eluding to this the other day, but several articles have appeared, showing a new game being developed by GarageGames. For those not familiar with Garage Games, it is made up of many original Dynamix employees (the ones who made Tribes 1 & 2). I'm looking forward to progress on these :)

I just wanted to note that we now have a 'Donate' button in the title bar for anyone who wishes to assist NextGen with the server hosting bill. I know initially he received some help, but donations have dried up since.
One thing that was discussed last Fight Night, was to offer up some sort of reward for donating. For example, you would be allowed to name the teams for the week. Or maybe it could involve naming the server in your honor for a week or so (depending on donation amount). If you guys have any ideas of what you would like in exchange for donations, feel free to offer them up for consideration.... or you could just donate for no other reason than to have a dedicated server ;)
You may notice the forums looking different. The forum software has been upgraded to a new revision, which is suppose to include better spam control. This new version came with a new theme format, which our previous theme isn't compatible with. I've changed it enough to add the header, but everything else is goofed right now.
New/previous mods will be added later so that the quick reply will return. Apparently that still wasn't integrated in, even though it seems to be the most popular mod ;) I'll need to go through the mod pages and see what new goodies may exist.
Also, you may notice the new 'donate' button at the top of the screen. This is to submit donations for the Branzone server. Donate what you can, if you can. There's no minimum.
Warchild as provided us with two new maps, which are now available for download. Please do it before joining the next Fight Night so we can enjoy these maps without dropping players.
Currently these maps are a seperate package. When I have more time, I will add them to the full install package. Some time during this next week, the maps will be added to the server. I don't want to add them until there has been time for these maps to get downloaded/installed.
Here's a quick link to the download post (Step 3 is the new maps): Downloads I don't even know if you could read this if you're included, but just in case I just wanted to notify everyone that I have banned an IP range to help reduce the bot spam. If you suddenly find yourself banned, please let me know. You can email me at notman at tacmod.com.
AerialStrike has a server that can support 64 players and has generously offered it up for us to use. I've uploaded the tac files and hopefully you'll see the server up soon.
I'm not sure yet if it will be a Friday only or not. I asked him if he could do atleast Friday nights, but if he leaves it up full time, I want to campaign the community to USE IT ;)
Warchild's server has been working great lately and I don't want it to seem like I don't want to support his also... just good to have another available and with the ability to host HUGE events. :D
Please let me know if you notice any issues from this minute forward. (Given you can reply ;))
Some may have noticed that we've been getting some spam posts here again. I've done some things to combat that again, and part of that included updating the forum software. I actually still have a few files to tweak, but things look like they are working for now.
There hasn't been much mentioned here about RenWerx and what they've been doing on the Volitant Assault project. I thought I'd post this link so you can see some of their models. This page badges it as Renegades, but many of these will be in the base also http://renwerx.com/prev05.shtml It is our pleasure to announce that we are beginning production of a new Team Aerial Combat game using Renwerx's game, Volitant Assault. As many of you know, Volitant Assault is a tribes-inspired game running on the Torque engine from Garage Games.
The torque engine is a heavily updated version of the Tribes2 engine. This technology has proven itself in past projects, and will make a solid foundation for TAC once again.
This is a chance for a new beginning for TAC. If you wish to contribuite, we are looking to add new team members. Experienced modelers are expecially needed. If you are interested, please post below.
